Module Purpose

This assessment checks the knowledge that you have learned in the training module:

You carry out the correct preparations before the blast.

You select and setup the appropriate blasting mode.

You test the radio communication reliability.

You fire blasts with single or multiple B3000 units.

You carry out post blast duties.

You can troubleshoot abnormal occurrences.

Prerequisites:

SHE introduction

Introduction to the site, currently engaged in blasting operations.

Possession of “Certificate of Completion” for i-kon™ System User for Open Cut, Quarrying and Construction.

This assessment may also be used to supplement the instructions delivered to new trainees attending a full theory course.

To complete this training, you need:

Loggers (recommend at least three)

At least three units Blaster 3000

Harness wire

Dummy training detonators

Blaster 3000 user instructions manual

Communcation networks (WIFI,LAN, LEaky Feeder etc)

Practical Assessment:

The following list is completed by the assessor while observing the trainee during the practical assessment:

Logging:

Has Blast Plan Prepared before logging started: neat/detailed/accurate
Calculates the quantities of detonators, harness wire, Loggers and Blasters required.
Plan a logging path with numbers of detonators per logger, number of loggers and harness wire to be used. Harness wire limit no exceeded
Check Loggers and all B3000 units. Battery capacity/self tests
Clears memory of Logger (s) Adjusts Loggers to appropaite mode and parameters. Checks Logger ID's.
Correctly lays out harness wire without tension, secures and insluates wires.
Correctly connectors detonators to the harness wire. Keeps connectors free of internal contamination and water
Logs each detonator, checks the dealy time, watches for leakage.
Completes regular checks for total leakage and communications throughout the logging and connecting process. Notes details and values on the blast plan.
Records all key information on the blast plan: Detonator’s position / Leakage current, stray Voltage / Location of splices in harness wire / Total leakage checks / etc.
Moves Logger to a safe location with little probability of damage. Ensured lots of slack in Logger lines. Ensures separation of Logger lines.
Verifies all detonator delay times in Loggers against the blast plan.
In each Logger, tests all detonators. Understands detonator errors and can solve them.
Understands what Globals are, chooses the correct setting in the Logger and knows its consequences.
Performs test with all Loggers with spare Logger from firing point. Checks the communication with all Loggers. Checks all detonators. Measures total leakage and stray voltage.
Turns Logger off.
If long time until blast, disconnects Loggers, cleans and stores then appropriately. Secures the end of the harness wire away from leakage sources.

Blast Preparations:

Develops and communicates the site-specific firing procedures
Checks the equipment to ensure that the equipment is fully charged and dongles are available.
Verifies that the Loggers are connected to their respective harness.
Verifies that the Logger’s position is safe and at an appropriate distance from the blast.
Verifies that harness wire extensions are secured to prevent Loggers being dragged forwards by the blast.
Verifies that Loggers are turned off. Logger cables inserted in Logger ports. Loggers correctly wired in parallel to the firing line.
Performs a “System Test” with spare Logger to verify the firing setup. Records leakage and stray voltage on the blast plan.
Correctly configures the Blasters for the blast. Checks self-test when switching on. Selects correct options.
Understands the setting for Globals and its consequences.
As shotfirer-in-charge takes control of the dongles for the Blaster 3000 units.

Blaster Settings:

Signal Testing:

Choses the location for Remote Blasters at a safe distance from the proposed blast site.
Establishes the locations of Controller well before blasting.
Verifies that No Loggers are attached to Remote Blasters for testing (except if allowed by mine’s procedures).
Demonstrates knowledge signal test procedures and of signal strengths.

Firing Blast with B3000:

Keeps Dongles in safe possession at all times.
Follows site specific firing procedures.
Establishes Remote (and Sync Blasters) position at safe distance from blast site.
Adjusts Sync cable to a suitable length for proposed Sync Blaster locations.
Waits until designated time as per firing procedure to activate Remote and Sync Blasters. Knows the instant of time when to connect the Loggers.
Correctly connects Loggers to Remote and Sync Blasters.
Correctly connects sync bus linking multiple synchronized Blasters.
Ensures that the firing line does not cross the Logger lines or run in parallel to them in close proximity.
Correctly activates the Remote Blasters and lets the Remote Dongles be written.
Checks that Controller is not turned ON.
Verifies the blast area is cleared and guarded. Understands point after which no personnel must enter the blast area.
Can operate the Blaster 3000 as a standalone device, in a remote-controlled blast, or in a synchronized blast.
Checks number of Loggers and detonators in Blaster overview before advancing to programming.
Coordinates programming countdown requirements with employer's blast countdown procedures.
Correctly fires the blast (with all reporting Blaster 3000 units) per mine firing procedure.

Post Blast:

Follows procedure for blast inspection and return time. Ensures personnel correctly waits the appropriate time before re-entering the blast area.
Secures Remote and firing Dongles after the blast for safekeeping.
Remote and Sync Blasters turned off, firing line disconnected, antenna disconnected and stored, cleaned and inspected for damage.
Uploads the blast reports.
Cleans all equipment units and charges for next use.

Troubleshooting and System knowledge:
